A cathedral - the church of the diocesan bishop and the religious heart of every diocese – is often referred to as the mother of all diocesan churches. Katowice Christ the King's Cathedral is no exception. Its dramatic and magnificent story reflects the history of the church, Poland and Silesia.
It took 28 years to build the Cathedral. For the political reasons the dome was lowered 38 meters in comparison to the original design project. The cathedral is considered to be the largest church in Poland.
On 20 June 1983 Pope John Paul II was praying at its altar. It was here that the first Synod of Katowice Diocese had its opening and closing ceremonies. A number of diocesan and assistant bishops as well as a few hundred priests were consecrated there.
